Skeptic finds he now agrees global warming is real

Skeptic finds he now agrees global warming is real - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON (AP) — A prominent physicist and skeptic of global warming spent two years trying to find out if mainstream climate scientists were wrong. In the end, he determined they were right: Temperatures really are rising rapidly.

The study of the world's surface temperatures by Richard Muller was partially bankrolled by a foundation connected to global warming deniers. He pursued long-held skeptic theories in analyzing the data. He was spurred to action because of "Climategate," a British scandal involving hacked emails of scientists.

Yet he found that the land is 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) warmer than in the 1950s. Those numbers from Muller, who works at the University of California, Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, match those by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA.
I won't post the whole article obviously, but it is well worth the read. Here is why this study is pretty groundbreaking...

First off, this is the scientist behind 'climategate', something half the threads in this forum reference. Two years ago some 'hacked' emails surfaced that appeared to say some scientists were fudging the numbers in some studies.

That led to a international news media blitz and of course all the climate change deniers saying they were right all along.

It also led the big oil companies to setup this study, which was funded by the Koch brothers of all people.

If you haven't heard of them, they are a pair of uber-rich right-wing conservatives who spend hundreds of millions a year funding organisations that back their corporate interests. They are hugely involved in big oil, which is why this report is so damning.

This study was funded by the top climate change deniers, and turns out, even their top scientist who they often quote and use his studies as proof has now publicly stated he was wrong and that all studies show climate change is happening.

There is no other reputable scientists out there that can now deny climate change, as this is the top scientist who started 'climategate' funded by big oil and corporate America has came out publicly and saying they were all wrong.

Pretty amazing and about time sure.

Fair play to him for having the guts to say he ws wrong, nothing else he could do after finding the truth and remain able to face himself in the mirror.
So I assume some here will say he was brainwashed/ threatened/ a pro global warming plant in the first place/ bribed etc.

I believe that some deniers have already started a thread claiming it's all wrong. There was a lot of jagged graphs and tin foil hats as far as I recall!

The correct verb is "are", as in, There are... The statement is otherwise laughable. You can start with Bill Gray, the world's foremost expert on hurricanes. Then go with Roger Pielke. You can read up on Bill Gray here:

    You can read Pielke here:

By the way, the tinfoil hat crowd are the fascists who have come with the "denial" meme.

Yes, the twats came out in force when that great repository of scientific facts, the Daily Mail, twisted the words of one of the co-authors to make it appear she disagreed with the publications.

She (Judith Curry) has now discovered that talking to the Daily Mail is dangerous, because the journalist had a long track record of mangling the statements of scientists to suit his political views ... and sell newspapers, of course.

If you are not already bored to the teeth by the serpentine writhing of the dying (and lying) cult of denialism, you can read about it here.

No way is William Gray the world's foremost expert on hurricanes!! How did you arrive at that conclusion? I would say it is Professor Kerry Emanuel of MIT. For example, Emanuel is a member of the US Academy of Sciences, and Gray is not. Maybe Gray was once, but at age 80 isn't that pushing things a bit?

In 2006, Gray predicted a global cooling trend in 2009-2010, but 2010 was one of the warmest years on record!

Pielke Snr is another aging scientist who is out of his depth. He does agree, though, that CO2 emissions must be limited. Recently, he had a long debate with the experts at the website Skeptical Science and admitted this:

"The emission of CO2 into the atmosphere, and its continued accumulation in the atmosphere is changing the climate. We do not need to agree on the magnitude of its global average radiative forcing to see a need to limit this accumulation. The biogeochemical effect of added CO2 by itself is a concern as we do not know its consequences. At the very least, ecosystem function will change resulting in biodiversity changes as different species react differently to higher CO2. The prudent path, therefore, is to limit how much we change our atmosphere."
Pielke Sr. and SkS Dialogue Final Summary

Gray and Pielke Snr are only two scientists of the 3% who are to some degree outside the scientific consensus on global warming.
