Thirteen new licences have been granted for gas and oil exploration.

    WELL WELL WELL!

'Thirteen new licences have been granted for gas and oil exploration for the Rockall, Slyne and Porcupine basins off the Irish coast.

I thought we didn't own Rochall. Didn't the UK win that argument in the 70's by posting a Royal Navy sailor to live there?

The new license is for Irish area of the Rockall Basin, rather than near the disputed territory.

I believe a final decision on the status of Rockall is with a UN body.

I wonder how many wells could be drilled with that billion scum announced they are handing over to the credit-unions.

a 2006 study, commissioned by Minister Rabbitte’s department, projected there is about €750 billion worth of oil and gas off the west coast...The problem is that our present fiscal terms with interested oil and gas giants favour the bulging coffers of these super-rich multinational companies and not the empty vaults of the Irish exchequer
Have Rabbitte & the LP finally sold out the Irish people? It looks like it.
Will Rabbitte walk the plank over oil and gas resources?

Here's the full press release for today's announcement:

Atlantic Ireland 2011 Dublin 17 October 2011 - Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources

More on the Rockall dispute here:
"The four competing applications are likely to be reviewed by the UN's Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) in March." It's still being considered

Interesting. I wonder where they are looking. Oil is usually on the continental shelf, rather than the deep sea (afaik).

Are they looking around the Rockall shelf? Thats very far out in the atlantic and would be pushing the boundary for exploration.

There's no evidence for this, in fact there is substantial evidence for exactly the opposite.
