O'Cuiv prefers jail to paying his septic tank charge

It appears that Fianna Fáil's new strategy is to become a rural Socialist Party (who made their breakthrough by organising resistence to bin charges).

O'Cuiv is willing to go to jail rather than pay the new septic tank charges he's about to be charged.

This follows Pat Carey's suggestion that Fianna Fáil take up the centre-left space "abandoned" by the Labour Party.

FF must move into space left by Labour, says former minister - The Irish Times - Fri, Aug 26, 2011

Can we look forward to O'Cuiv and Carey scuffling with Gardaí on the streets of Spiddal over turf cutting rights?

Mind you, a few spells in the chokey didn't do his granddad's political career any harm at all.

I wonder are they getting the Liam Lawlor Suite in the Joy ready for another VIP guest just in case Dev Óg actually decides to go the Gandhi route.

Forget prison. Just register a charge againsthis house. Charge plenty penalty interest and when the fool dies the state can collect from his estate.

    What a pOpulist scumbag move.
THE number 1 problem in this state since it's foundation is people deciding the rules are for other people especially taxes, regulations etc.

While I don't like this charge and am expecting some him dodgy dealings with who profits from it, we do have serious issues with rural drinking water and much of it comes from dreadful sloppily made septic tanks and farm waste etc.
This privilaged politician who sits on the legislative house should use his actual law given power to oppose it not instigate yet more FF disregard for the law.

As if he'd have the bottle to go to jail, that's reserved for people with principles in the Dail such as Joe Higgins,Clare Daly(I'm no leftist and I wouldn't vote for them but have serious respect for them) and Ming.O Cuiv won't go to jail for anything and I'll wager any amount of money on that!

The whole septic tank scenario is a joke. Households miles from rivers and streams with septic tank pose no threat whatsoever to the environment. It's the old Irish answer to everything similar to giving child benefit to millionaires and beggars alike.

Except the underground water that wells in the locale tap into. That's the problem and they often have appalling coliform rates.

I'd like to see him go to jail but not for this, rather for being stupid and a member of cabinet...

Nonetheless this is a pretty harsh tax on rural dwellers not all of whom are millionaire posh home owners. There are plenty of low and medium income families living outside urban sewage systems, especially on the edges of town and villages.

Living in the country is kinda nice but definitely more expensive than living in a town or city. We spend millions of euro building new sewage systems for urban dwellers who do not have to pay any special tax, as they already pay tax but rural dwellers pay the same tax and usually have (and rightly so given population density) a less extensive range of public services. Every thing from access to medical services, public transport, water and broadband is second rate outside the larger towns and cities.

O Caoimh had his snout in the trough for many years, big ministerial pay, garda driver etc. He probably resents having to join traffic jams in Galway city to hold his "clinic", pay parking charges etc and not having all the perks of office. He has probably looked into his own heart and come up with this. Water in Galway is not fit to drink due to contamination by human and animal waste. Last month i was in London and its safe to drink tap water there, pop 9.5 million people.
Next he will join Shell to Sea protesters !

He martyring himself for the locals, the constituency will fall down around voters ears but they'll remember O'Cuiv stood by them and was willing to go to jail to defend the locals from this oppressive government.....or some bullshyte
Voters don't decide issues, they decide who will decide issues.
