I stayed close to some large turbines in Wexford, and although the noise was not loud it is fairly continuous, and after a couple of nights I found it quite disturbing. It sounded like a large colony of seals .
That's not unpleasant, even for extended period of time. I lived near a seal colony and never had the sound bother me. Though if those turbines sounded like seals, the turbines needed maintenance.

Are you sure there wasn't a seal colony nearby?

Oh the horror! Radiation all over the place, plumes of thick smoke... oh wait, wrong disaster scenaria.

The first picture was a better one, more spectacular. But it showed the turbine head reversed to the wind. It looks like the feathering and directional mechs failed and allowed the blades to reverse face to the wind. Feathering doesn't work in reverse as well as forward. The gearbox got driven in reverse, which it isn't really designed for, and burned out.

    The others look fine.

Health impacts of wind turbines seems to be widely accepted by our legislature see debate on the Wind Turbines Bill 2012 - Seanad Éireann - 22/Feb/2012 Wind Turbines Bill 2012: Second Stage

Will they introduce a 2km setback in the legislation?

Solution maybe to move to the model of larger farms situated at least 2km from nearest dwelling? That seems to be the 'best international practise'. Here there are all sorts of lunacies being proposed to install spire like structes 2 - 300m from homes.

Good proposal from Labour in fairness and got majority support so could become law if passed on simialr basis in Dáil.

Fianna Fail position on siting wind farms and indivdual turbines close to dwellings

Is this now Fianna Fail policy on the siting of wind farms and individual turbines?

There is no doubt that wind turbines and their siting so close to houses have a detrimental effect on families and communities. ... There is no doubt that primary legislation would give protection to the citizen above the institutions and the organisations and those who would site wind turbines next door to people.
    ...
I have been on wind farms and have visited people’s houses located in the middle of wind farms. It is like being at an airport when they are going at maximum capacity and there is nothing anybody can do about it. The previous Government, of which I was a member, failed to regulate the issue. ... Guidelines are useless. Primary legislation means the citizen can be defended.
Extracts taken from the contributions of Senator Mark Daly (FF) during the Seanad debate on the Wind Turbines Bill 2012. Seanad Éireann - 22/Feb/2012 Wind Turbines Bill 2012: Second Stage

He goes on to state that FF will support the legislation. I am wondering is this now FF policy to set a 2KM setback from turbines to peoples homes?

What utter bollix. I've worked around both wind farms and airports and the airport wins hands-down on noise.

I have lived in my home for 10 years and a couple of years ago 5 turbines were erected about 750 metres up the hill at the back of my house. Some days are fine and you wouldn't notice them too much but on a windy night they are a curse. The noise is quite terrible as it is a repetitive whooshing noise which is as irritating as a dripping tap. I think the company involved are now looking for permission to put up some more and I will have to put in an objection as it would become unbearable.

He possibly meant to add that the airport could have been Sligo on a busy day.

Two piper cubs and paper plane visiting from the IT.

    Alastriona,

I have no idea where you live or who owns the windfarm, but here is a genuine offer if you wish to take it up.

I will, if you wish, speak to the operator on your behalf, there is perhaps a lot that could be done to improve your situation and experiences such as yours are to no one's long term advantage or in any one's interest.
