    Septic tanks-Phil Hogan's poison chalice?

EC wants Ireland fined over septic tanks - RT News
This is coming. How many domestic systems around the country will pass?
In cases where systems do not pass, one has to wonder where many people will get the money from to replace septic tanks and soakage beds in the current climate if they want to be compliant.
I suspect much of Leitrim may be in big trouble-still county councils were quite happy to give planning permission for just about anything in the last 15 years. Perhaps they should bear some responsibility.
Just wait for all the gombeen county councillors to get excited about this.

Having said all that one has to ask how farming does not pose a risk to human health and water supplies or is there any relative risk analysis carried out by our environmental brethern?

My advice would be to look at the French system as they usually seem to be able to get around European legislation.
Anyway could the bill run into billions.

Did Phil Hogan not know that this was coming- why did he accept environment?

Why does Europe regulate what we do with our poos ? I'm kinda missing the necessity for their involvement...

The EU need to watch how we control our pollutants because the thickos at county council level are incapable of doing so.

Another money making scam for some cronie companies again.
Do Irish Governments think artificial, no exports economy, built on petty regulations, levies and taxes is going to work ?
The death of Ireland by a thousand cuts continues, while the golden circle continue to leach us to death.

Jeasus.... I've got a septic tank. Built in 1998. Got it cleaned out over Xmas, but don't know if it would pass any tests... How much would a new treatment system cost?

I don't think it will be an issue the fine is only €2.7 millon and €9.5 million per annum after that. Balance the government handing over a small sum like this against tackling 400,000 septic tanks, no contest.

It depends where you are (pay more if close to Dublin) and whether you go for a fancy system involving aeration etc.
Also, the soakage bed can also be a major cost were it necessary to replace that also.

We just got quoted €7,000 for a system to replace our current septic tank and percolation field.
