Huge blast at nuclear power plant in Japan, SOE declared at second plant.

On RTe news 12 noon Friday 11 /2011.
A state of emergency has been issued in Japan where one of their nuclear power plants has had a coolant failure due to the recent earthquake.
Another nuclear plant has had a fire emergency in it's turbine hall.
The Japanese Prime Minister has declared that there has been no release of radiation.
Will be interesting to see how these plants handle these extreme conditions.
Watch out for the usual hysterical screaming from the Anti Nuke Brigade!

Dozens, they are like France. They are all over the place, in residential areas, the works.
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

    2005:
Scientists are re-examining the potential dangers to nuclear power plants in the wake of the catastrophic earthquake that struck the Indian Ocean last December, triggering a massive tsunami.

"There are scores of nuclear power plants operating in coastal areas and some of these may need to take a renewed look at this external hazard," IAEA Director of Nuclear Power, Mr. Akira Omoto said. "It is also true for plants presently under construction." It is common for nuclear power plants to be built in coastal areas, drawing the seawater to cool the reactor.
Risks to Nuclear Reactors Scrutinized in Tsunami´s Wake

    http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/2005/tsunami.html

I suspect they'll be shutting down at-risk plants along the US West Coast at present:

    2008:
This illustration, from a recent Nuclear Regulatory Commission report soberly titled “Tsunami Hazard Assessment at Nuclear Power Plant Sites in the United States of America,” says that those rogue waves most often caused by big earthquakes “can result in a severe hazard to safety-related cooling-water systems as well as other structures, systems and components important to safety of a nuclear power plant.”

“The primary effect of the tsunami waves on a plant site is flooding … and loss of cooling water (due to dry intakes during drawdown caused by receding tsunami waves).”
“However, there are also several other effects, mainly from hydrodynamic forces that can cause severe damage to structures and the foundations of these structures.”
The NRC last updated its construction guidelines for this type of thing more than 30 years ago – in 1977.

The fallout from this will be interesting.
