    All eyes on Katla

I think this deserves its own thread

All Eyes On Katla Volcano After Eyjafjallajökull Eruption | UK Telecoms News | Phone System News | 08 Number News

Katla is another volcano in Iceland. Situated to the north of Vík í Mýrdal and partly covered by the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, Katla’s peak reaches 1,512 metres. Katla last had a major eruption in 1918 and the one word used to describe that has been ‘vicious.’ Since 1999, geologists have been uneasy around the Katla volcano as it showed signs of waking up and historically, every time the Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupts, Katla soon follows. The past two days has seen an increase of 200% in Katla’s activity. This isn’t something to just worry the residents of Iceland, but of the whole world too. Smog, famine, floods and freezing were just some of the things the last Katla eruption caused.
We need emergency planning - if Air transport is disrupted, Ireland as an island becomes very remote. If europe and further afield is affected i am afraid that we are also last on the priorities for getting food.
If our crops fail we have about 2 weeks of food on the island right now.

Our National Emergency Planning Committee has a strict policy: they never meet until the emergency is mature. Then they try to find out stuff. Then they go home.

Anyone in Leinster House reading this - get questions down to BC about this today, planning for operating without air travel for 6 months is a real probability if Katla (as is likely) erupts

Apart from flight we need to urgently rethink our policies on self-sufficiency. We have been led by EU policies to decrease our own food production, forgetting that we cannot ultimately depend on others. We remain an island nation and if food importation is restricted, for whatever reason, the price will rocket, followed by God knows what.

Kind of a scary thought alright. Huge eruptions lead to dramatic changes in our climate.

Oh and we have blow all our money an all conceiveable credit on bank bailouts.

We absolutely need an agriculture strategy that involves being able to feed 5 million people
