MOTORISTS who want to 'go green' by buying an electric car will have to pay €1,200 a year to rent the battery.
French motoring giant Renault admitted yesterday that the battery would not be included in the price of four electric vehicles (EVs) which will go on sale from next year.

The Irish government don't have much control over the prices of the new cars though.

AFAIK, this thing of not charging VRT on electric vehicles has been in force for a year or two already.

So the €5k "grant" only covers the battery lease for 4 years. In a round about way it's more a government subsidy to Reanult than a grant to the customer.

    And from the same article:
The sale prices of the Renault models have yet to be decided -- but they will be more expensive than either petrol or diesel cars.
    Hmmmm...

Who will pay the extra tax if car taxation is abolished and subsidised instead?

Seriously the developers are on hard times and need a state subsidy

Mad money altogether! If we're talking about urban commuting how about a grant towards a decent electric bike/scooter? You'd have a big take up from the likes of students eg.
