The planting of flowers in public spaces continues and may increase because of the RTE TV Show Dirty Old Towns.
Planting wild flower seeds in shallow trays (4 inches deep) means the plant roots mesh together and form a mat. Later they can be removed from the trays in one piece and then be placed as ready made little gardens wherever you choose to put them.
Planted two spare lengths of guttering and the flowers are now coming on strong. Ideal way to have ready made ring gardens to place around the base of trees.
Once planted packets of wildflower seeds on an 8 by 3 foot length of chicken wire covered with bags of compost purchased at a DIY store. The roots of the plants meshed and I was able to roll up this 'wild flower garden' and transport it to where I had cleared a piece of ground used for dumping cans and bottles by the local teenagers
Lo and behold this instant garden of Eden has flourished. The cans and bottles are far more rare now and easily disposed of.
Of course it's not all selfless, we benifit too. From the exercise and an enhanced neighbourhood.
Every day I walk my dogs along the canal by Allenwood and the wild flowers are comming up great, all the old favorites are there and some new ones, only problem is it's not kids damaging them but adults, and paid to do it!!!!!!!!! the wild Orchids come up, though less and less because Waterways Ireland send a huge tractor down to slice up the grass, dig deep ruts, and leave huge bare patches where the blades are set too low. I would willingly mow a walking path during the growing season and they could cut later on in the year and have actually asked them about it, but no the tractor must cut at the time it does never mind the rare and beautiful natural flora.
A hand full of wild seed thrown into hoof prints make nice bunches of colour.
