There's lots of evidence to support the claim that coursers conserve the hare. Put simply in the North of this island where coursing is illegal the hare population has been decimated.. While here in the South where the hare is regularly terrorised by coursers the species is thriving...
When coursing was legal in the North, hares were also abundant... It doesn't take a genius to come to the most logical conclusion...
Hares more plentiful in coursing areas | Irish Examiner
Quercus | 3. Hare coursing in Ireland
Why don't they get off their arses and do it so? In the north once coursing was banned hare populations were decimated.... The reality is that these armchair welfare activists who campaign for these "immoral" acts to be banned will never bother getting off their hole to fill the conservation vacuum that will result. They have no interest in the hares survival, and all they can be bothered about doing is mouthing off at things that make them a bit queasy..
The coursers do however, have a vested interest in the hares survival, and actively make the wild existence of such animals much more pleasant as a result of habitat conservation and feeding when times are tough... It's give and take scenario, and both have developed a mutual dependence on one another in modern ireland... Without coursing it's bye bye hare and vice versa...
