    I would also have concerns about skill-sharing on a barter basis, or bartering in general. While of course it benefits the participants, and even the local economy, it does not provide tax revenue to support social services. How is this approached in Totnes?

    I think that their attitude to skill sharing would generally be for the purpose of education for real economic activity, not for setting up a radical commune economy. Transition projects seem to be invariably pro-capitalism in practice. Lewes, Kenmare and Totnes have set up their own currencies in order to deliver more business to local enterprise.

    The idea is to create a voucher system that is worth slightly less than the national legal tender. It is valid only in co-operating local businesses, who offer price parity with the national currency.
