Birds have disappeared from back garden is last 3 to 4 weeks. Do they migrate to better feeding pastures this time of year ? Since the cold spell early this year herself and meself have been making the effort and miss a new hobby

That's extraordinarily tasteless ocoonassa, you really should be deeply ashamed of your stupidity.
I lived in Tipperary during the last and exceptionally cold winter. There's a fruit and veg shop in Roscrea that sells large bags of bird seed, I think they're 1.5kg bags and cost €3.50, much cheaper than the more commercial types of bird seed available in many shops. The shop is situated off the main road, down a small lane beside the Ulster Bank office. It's so good I recently drove down from Dublin to Roscrea to collect some items and while I was there picked up 4 bags of seed for the coming winter.

Why not come out with a scheme to give a bird box to each primary school that they can put up in a suitable place for the young children to enoy watching the birds. Start the passion for bird watching young and they will probally ask their parents to buy a bird box and maybe it will spiral.

I'm heading out tomorrow to buy lot's of food to give to my neighbours for our winged brethern who give us much pleasure. I give to charities also re africa, but until some of your governments get a grip on the corruption in a lot of african countries, I have suspended my donations. I refuse to be emotionally blackmailed by starving children until those countries stop using your pain to fill their lifestyles and those of their families with luxuries while there people starve! Change comes from the bottom up!

For the last week a male great tit has been spending all the hours of darkness in our bird box.*

It's not particularly cold out, so I assume that, being a German bird, he's "laying his towel on the sunbed" for the spring.

*How do I know? I hear you ask.

It is one of the places I have a voyeur camera installed.

Toland, what kind of camera set-up have you, do you mind me asking? How much did it cost, ease of installation, etc. Has it got its own monitor or do you connect it to your tv etc? Thanks!
