Looks like we've finally turned the corner on the icy weather - fingers crossed. The breeding season is in full swing now so if you can keep up the feeding our feathered friends will appreciate it. They'll shortly have several more mouths to feed and will need lots more energy for endless food runs to feed the wains.

I've had friends and family reporting sparrowhawks in their areas all around the countryside. They must be thriving. Lots of easy pickings for them during the icy winter no doubt, as birds and small animals spent more time out in the open scavenging for food. Nature can be so brutal

    Return of the siskins!

After an absence of a week my siskins are back with a vengeance. About 40 of them have completely taken over the niger, seed and nut feeders. The garden has its own golden meteor storm to brighten up the rainy day.

Hi Grainne. It could be down to the location of the boxes. The RSPB have good advice on them. Have a read and see if maybe you need to reposition them?

    RSPB: Nestboxes for small birds

Also be sure to position them in a north to north-easterly facing direction. This means less direct sunlight and protection from the nasty westerly winds and weather that prevails in Ireland. Our birds know the Irish weather better than us

At first I thought it was a blackbird but then I spotted the white patch on the breast.

Usual point and shoot quality pics I'm afraid
