BLESSED UNREST - The immune system of humanity finally kicking in

Yes states exist, and while there pressure has to be put on them to sign up to binding deals to cap emissions and really make an effort to reduce carbon PPM (parts per million) down to 350...

In the meantime, many of us, some new to things, some at "activism" since 60's and 70's feel that this is a time like no other, due to comunication tools (like this blog), like the enormity of the problems we are in, but also the new mechanism, or organism that is being created to deal with these processes. Huge part of that is a bottom up grassroots movement that is growing, for some they want to smash the state, grand let them at it, for many, its about simply connecting and building movements, taking action in your own locality, sorting problems locally and continuing in this way.

US ecologist Paul Hawken has referred to it as BLESSED UNREST, check out this short vid to get an idea of what hes on about; the immune system of humanity finally kicking in

Direct Action gets results; E.ON Shelves Kingsnorth

Great news this week, showing that awareness is growing, action is being taken, results are being gotten. We have still a massive fight on our hands, but those of influenced by the Tao know that those first steps are the always the hardest:

Direct Action gets results; E.ON Shelves Kingsnorth
If indeed this is an eco war, then this surely is another great win in the battle for (y)our future

Environmentalists are celebrating after plans to build a new coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth in Kent were put on hold for three years.

Energy firm E.On blamed the recession and a fall in electricity demand saying it would not now be needed until 2016.

Protesters who held a Camp for Climate Change at the site last year said it showed how people could take back the power from corporations and government.

Awakening out of age of stupid, action starts to get results

Sorry again FF, but this is not rubbish, as yesterdays guardian (cant really argue they are misinformed now, can you?) nicely puts things:

Cheers to the climate activists, it's been a week to remember

Campaigns by Climate Camp, Greenpeace, Plane Stupid and others are having a real impact, but will the government learn?

What a day, what a weekend, what a week for climate protesters! First E.ON gives up on building the proposed coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth. Then BAA backs off from building the third runway at Heathrow. And finally Greenpeace welcomes MPs back to work from the roof of parliament, waving a banner that reads "Change the politics, Save the climate". Let's hope this time the MPs are paying attention.

It would be ridiculous to pretend that E.ON and BAA gave up just because activists had waged steadfast and imaginative campaigns against them. The economy played a vital role too; for months now the maths on the third runway has not added up. E.ON cited the recession as the main reason for its abandonment of the coal plant that, just a year or so ago, was apparently crucial to the continuation of life as we knew it...
I agree that all this is not down primarly to one group, one action, one event, or simply the "downturn" in the economy, it is a mixture of all these factors. But Surely having your design scrutinized in court and having being given the big thumbs down, as happened in the example when the KINGSNORTH 6 argued successfully "lawful excuse", is a big blow and has had large part in the reasons for the pull out.

And just to add another win into this pot:

Clean coal dealt second blow as Danish energy giant pulls out of Scottish plans

Dong Energy withdraws from 1.6GW Hunterston power station scheme just days after E.ON shelves Kingsnorth

Plans for a new generation of "clean coal" power stations were dealt another severe blow after the Danish energy giant Dong Energy announced it was pulling out of plans for a major new coal-fired plant in Ayrshire.

Dong said it was withdrawing from the 1.6GW Hunterston power station scheme, which would eventually use carbon capture technology, and a further coal-fired plant in Germany, to focus its efforts on green energy and cutting its CO2 emissions.

The decision raises further doubts about the future of UK and Scottish government plans to invest heavily in "clean coal" plants after the energy firm E.ON said last week it was shelving proposals for a new coal-burning station at Kingsnorth in Kent.

FF, it seems to me that something is happening, direct action is part of the process of change.

Im glad you too are working for cleaner wiser future, designing the alternative. As its not eneough to simply shut stuff down, we have to build up the alternatives. Thats what i work at too.

But the important thing, be it craic or a spiritual shift, or simply becuase its trendy... more and more people are starting to get involved in changing the world. Great.

    Take a look at what the young people in England were up to yesterday at POWERSHIFT;

Shake your booty in Big Ben's shadow – teenagers dance to save the planet

Politicians could learn a lot from the UK Youth Climate Coalition
And its not only in England, Ireland or northern europe where these early days of climate action are happening.

In the US, the coal factory which sits right outside the white house in Washington, was shut down by the US Powershift and related day of action back in early March:

So back to the initial title of this article.

We, the people, are waking up.

I leave you with Amy Goodman (yes the alternative nobel prize winner) interviewing those waking up and taking action in the US from Democracy Now:

Interesting bunch of posts dunk, here, read this....

    Bobbie Johnson in San Francisco
    guardian.co.uk, Sunday 3 May 2009

"In an energy-constrained world, we cannot continue to grow the footprint of the internet … we need to rein in the energy consumption," said Subodh Bapat, vice-president at Sun Microsystems, one of the world's largest manufacturers of web servers.

"We need more data centres, we need more servers. Each server burns more watts than the previous generation and each watt costs more," he said. "If you compound all of these trends, you have the perfect storm."

"With more than 1.5 billion people online around the world, scientists estimate that the energy footprint of the net is growing by more than 10% each year."

"From having a relatively small impact just a few years ago, it is now leapfrogging other sectors like the airline industry that are more widely known for their negative environmental impact."
