Applying the rules of a Lisbon rerun to a GE

Not sure if anyone has opened a thread on this, but can anyone explain why we cannot use the same reasons for the Lisbon rerun to get a General Election?

    Surely someone can explain this?

Sorry the opening post is so short, but I am at a complete loss, the only thing I can think of is that Brian Clowen and Co., only act out of self interest and not in the National interest? Surely not, you cry, surely he thinks about Ireland every night before retiring to bed?

If a Lisbon rerun was tied into a GE, would they have it again or become No campaigners, because this is what I see in our elected 'representatives' (I have that in quotes because Brian Cowen represents a very small group of people and that doesnt include the Irish public).
If I could mass-sterilise the planet, I would. Seriously.

We get a general election if the government loses a confidence vote, or the government calls one. We get a referendum if the government calls one. Are you proposing some other mechanism?

The Government are holding a second Lisbon referendum because the first one did not deliver their desired result. So if Fianna Fáil are in government we more than likely got the result we wanted so Brian Cowen is hardly going to call a general election to reverse it, which is what your proposing. They only way the government will fall is if the Green's pull the plug, some FF backbenches cross the floor or we have a bloody coup!

Not initially, but now that you mention it, yes, it would be nice if we could exercise proper public will over elected representatives in this country, remember Schwarzenegger got elected on the recalling of Gray Davis.

However, I was more having a tongue in cheek go at the government and their dishonest intentions about the reason for the rerun.

But now we are at it, it seems that the constitution and the changing of it is in poor hands at the moment and the President does what she is told when she is told.

In a nutshell, I dont buy for one second a word that comes out of Clowen & Co.'s mouths.

Don't joke about it OD. We could be forced to spend the next five years voting for Lisbon and a FF government in a continuious loop unless we give the right answers.
