Labour calls for electoral boundary changes

The Labour Party has called on the Government to move quickly to have constituency boundaries redrawn before the next election, to end the uncertainty in the wake of the preliminary census figures.

Attorney General Rory Brady has been asked to report back to the Government next month on whether it would be legally safe to proceed with the election on the current boundaries, in the light of the wide disparities shown by the census.

A Labour spokesman said yesterday that given the likelihood of a legal challenge to the current constituencies, it would be in everyone's interest to have the issue clarified well before the election. - Irish Times

One detects the whiny hand of Joan Burton in this.....
"Elite - a small superior group; esp one that has a power out of proportion to its size." (Oxford English Dictionary)

The majority cannot therefore be the elite.

Standing up for the constitution is hardly whining.

Has anyone noticed the amount of noise the Shinners have made around this issue - particularly in Dublin West? I see thay had a picket outside Bertie's constituency office in the aftermath of the preliminary census figures been published - it was picked up by all the local press and most carried a photograph. Their Councillor Felix Gallagher would surely fancy his chances if this goes to four seats and it has to be said he'd be in with a big chance. Any thoughts? It was interesting to note FG's motormouth Dr Leo wasn't so keen on Dublin West been made a 4 seater this time round...

It's interesting what rewop22 says. I've been keeping a close eye on events in this constituency as I live here. I've had no less that 3 pieces of litriture dropped through my leterbox from Felix Gallagher of Sinn Fein. I get the impression he's a grafter - he puts the work in. If it goes to four seats it will be one of the fiercest battles in the country probably between Burton and Gallagher and maybe between Gallagher and Joe. My prediction 1 FF 1 FG 1 SP and I going to stick my neck out and say 1 SF..

Bruton has nothing to gain from this. Its not like there's going to be a fourth seat in Dublin west. She might even lose some of her voters to another constituency.
The only way to change the world is to win elections.
