Sinn Féin to push for writ to be moved for by-election in Donegal

Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin will tomorrow publish a motion on the Dáil Order Paper on behalf of the Sinn Féin TDs which calls for the writ to be moved for the holding of the by-election in Donegal South West to fill the seat left vacant as a result of the election of Pat the Cope Gallagher to the European Parliament.

We should have a law whereby a by-election must be held at the next election/referendum. It's disgraceful that any constituency should be under-represented relative to every other constituency in the country.

whether they get a candidate elected or not is one thing.

I like the fact that this is a move to a somewhat more normal political situation where people dont wait 6-9 months for a TD to represent them.

The govt. cant be trusted to move the writ so its up to someone else to do it.

Sinn Féin are only doing this for the same reason Fine Gael were going to pass the writ for Dublin South, to gain political brownie points amongst the electorate, mind you Fianna Fáil would no doubt do the same if we were in opposition.

i agree it should happen sooner rather than let the government drag its heels, i'm just wondering if SF could actually pull it off ? they came close last time but lots have changed and they've not really progressed as they would have expected to in the current climate, still i guess this has to be one of their better chances
