    Sligo/North Leitrim & Roscommon/South Leitrim

Anyone got views on what the outcome of these two contests will be?

Martin Kenny is in the South Leitrim area. A candidate for Sligo/North Leitrim would need to be Sligo town based to have any chance of wining here.

Would love to see Sean McManus taking the seat. Will Young Chris have a shot if not Sean. Will the new boundaries damage their chances.

Chris would not be a popular choice within party ranks locally. Also, his almost losing his seat in locals not a help. Boundaries wont help it but wont really do much harm either. Losing a lot of South Leitrim that was weak - the Carrick/Mohill area etc.

Dont think Sean will win it. Hes gone past it at this stage. Time for new blood.

Any thoughts on the new blood? It has worked wonders in other areas.

    New Blood

Theres no-one really obvious there at the minute. It'll probably take time to develop someone suitable.

Whether the MacManus' wil be happy with that is doubtful.

    Sligo/Nth Leitrim: 2FF 1 FG.

Assuming Harkin won't run Eamon Scanlon in prime position to take a 2nd seat for FF given his strength in south Sligo. If FG run Tony McLaughlin from Sligo town he may well take out John Perry. Devins should be safe. Sligo was an excellent area for FF in June to gain a seat and against the tsunami as well. SF appear to have peaked in Sligo. Both McManus' votes fell and SF didn't come close to gaining an extra county council seat. Think there is some annoyance over the apparent Mcmanus dynasty they are trying to build there. Having said that SF's 3rd cllr Arthur Gibbons did increase his vote well over 99, given how the McManuses didn't maybe he should be considered for a nomination.

In Roscommon/Nth Leitrim I see 1FF 2FG. Naughten is safe for FG and Frank Feighan may have a good chance in the north of the constituency. There will be a bitter FF convention here. I can see them being forced to run 3 candidates: Ellis, Finneran and one of Doherty/Leyden and in doing so let the blueshirts in to win a 2nd seat. While SF appear to have a good base in Ballinamore and won a seat in Ballaghadreen other areas of Roscommon were negligible in terms of support. Anyone know where Reynolds wants to run?

Scanlon is making strong running at the minute. But there will be huge internal tensions between him and Devins over what areas they can canvass etc. Particularly over the West Sligo area.

Gibbons increased his vote by 13% to 20% in the locals and is running well at the moment. Would be extremely popular town candidate and would have won a North Sligo Council seat if he had to run.

At the minute I would see it as 1FF, 1FG and Harkin if she runs. If she doesn't, 1FF, 1FG and the last seat betwen FF and SF if SF get its act together.

SF are strong in the town with the potential for further increases - are very instrong in the North Leitrim area where Cllr Michael Colreavy is based and in the other rural areas of Sligo are building steadily, particularly in areas such as West Sligo.
