surely it would make most sense to have it on the same day as Lisbon 2

You and I might think that. But then you will have FF/FG/Labour having there usual mock punch and judy show while at the same time showing the electorate that they are really all the same in the referendum. Also, an even more crude reason is that Donegal SW delivered one of the highest No votes in Lisbon 1 so encouraging a higher turnout with a by-election would not be the best idea if you trying to pass it.

McBrearty now looking at a seat in the Dail - Derry Today
Cllr McBrearty said he had no comment to make in relation to the pending by-election after Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher’s election to the European Parliament, but strongly hinted that if he was given support he would contest the position.

I just have this feeling that one could see the relationship of Mr McBreaty & the Labour party sometime in the future ending up in tears!

Would say with the lisbon treaty rerun, FF knows the party vote will come out for that this time, and in DSW that is a big vote. Cant see donegal electing a Labour party candidate, FF have senator from Letterkenny Brian O'D (cant remember second name). SF have Pearce Doherty (cant see it) although you never know if voters are pissed obvoius protest vote especially for FF voters.

    Will be interesting

Quite likely but having got a taste of electoral success he could well decide to run as an independant - it's not as if the votes he got were because of any Labour party policy.

Either way the chances are he will run for the Dail, and get enough votes to affect the outcome.
