Ganley's vision for the EU was analysed and filleted in every way possible.
And he was more than willing to share that vision, to the point of co-operating in a book.
Now, how many articles, written during the election campaign, can you find, which outline the visions of
FF,
FG or Labour for the EU?
These questions simply were not asked and Irish journalists should hang their heads in shame for the simplistic, even childish, analysis which they applied to the campaign. As a nation we are now no better informed about the workings of the EU than we were before the EP elections. We are sending MEPs to represent our interests without knowing their positions on vital economic and social matters because they were quizzed about potholes in Ballymagash.
For example, the issues of
FF's new-found liberal ethos and of
FG's pursuit of a federal Europe were never teased out by the Irish media. They were too busy, like schoolyard bullies, trying to outdo one another in shredding Ganley. The ultimate losers are the Irish people.
