British National Party - now 2 seats (and a third if Lisbon comes into force)

Nick Griffin has won the last (eighth) seat in Nortwest England for the BNP.

They came seventh in West Midlands and so will be allocated the extra seat if Lisbon comes into force and increases the number of European Parliament seats.

    That is terrible

How could people vote for them????

Can't Labour just give that seat to a different constiuency if Lisbon is passed?

No. It was already agreed that West Midlands would get the extra seat. I think this is on the basis that in England it's the seat with the highest ratio of population/voters (not sure which is used in U.K.) to MEPs. I don't think that could be, or indeed should be, changed now.

There's a discussion on another thread when I point out that if the U.K. used STV like in Ireland (Republic and Northern Ireland) rather than a single vote and the de Hondt system then the BNP might well end up with none or fewer seats and certainly wouldn't end up with more.

It's failed immigration policies that cause the election of people like Griffin.

The Midlands and North of England has been swamped with immigrants and there is a perception of supplanation of English workers.

As with Germany in 1933, people turn to desperate measures when traditional politics fails them. I have a feeling many who voted BNP did so with a heavy heart, but unfortunately, it seems parties like the BNP are the only ones who take the side of the people, exploitive though they may be.

However, it's also pretty disgusting and disgraceful that anyone would lump Declan Ganley in with a crowd like the BNP.

The BNP are racists, Libertas are not.

D'hont is so confusing in comparison with STV imo.

Maybe that would be something Tories,Labour and Lib Dems would want to stop BNP doing well.

The consensus here in London is that multiseat STV as practised in Ireland is overly complicated and difficult for voters to understand. I'm Irish and my girlfriend is Maltese/Australian so between us we have nationality of the three countries in the world that use multiseat STV for national elections (in Australia the Senate (upper house) only)!

The issue with multiseat STV is that it gives a lot more of a role to individual candidates as opposed to political parties. Hence, the parish pump nature of Irish politics.

The Dhondt system could be improved in the U.K. by providing that if any party doesn't get enough votes to be sure of a seat (e.g. about 14.3% in a six seat constituency) then its votes are distributed according either to the preference of that party or perhaps to the second preferences of individual voters. This would remove the "wasted vote" problem that arises with the Dhondt system.
