Green Party terminally ill

Requesting burial in an environmentally friendly wicker coffin.

(2004 locals GP 18 +10)
2009 locals GP 2 -16 (so far)
Dublin GP candidate Euros 4%
More independent PD councillors than Greens

Unsafe TDs -
John Gormley Minister for the environment
Eamon Ryan Minister for energy
Ciaran Cuffe
Paul Gogarty

Trevor Seargeant said he would not lead Greens into Govt. with FF and then did the 'moral' thing and stood down as leader which makes it all right and then took a ministerial position

FF's mandate! to govern is based on the support of this party disgraced former FG'er Michael Lowry, Minister for private Healthcare Mary Harney, Jackie Healy Rae and Finian McGrath

Note to the Greens: if you do manage to hang on till 2012 FF TDs might be saved but you wont be

It is often forgotten that John Gormely ALSO said that the Greens would not go into Government in his Planet Bertie Speech at the 2007 conference.
Address by John Gormley to the National Convention / Latest news / News / Home - Green Party / Comhaontas Glas

"...For let there be no doubt, we want Fianna Fáil and the PDs out of Government"

Interesting to read this speech as a list of what the Greens have reneged on.
Harsh lesson on making promises in elections, as strangley people actually remember what they voted for, and do hold parties to account on their performance!

Feel sorry for the Greens. They were a bit naive and frankly don't deserve the kicking they are getting.

They have got a good dose of roundup ,I'm delighted,I hope they fade away and die.
A champion of the people emerges with the age-old and appealing promise of "something for nothing" - to be financed through every-increasing taxes. Supply and demand are thrown out of gear - the overhead goes up; the effective use of human energy goes down; the standard of living is lowered because money cannot buy wealth that is not produced.

Their policy was presumably to prove that they wouldn't pull out of government at a drop of a hat (and being ministers also provided an incentive).

This would be useful during negotiations for future governments (as they would be seen as a serious party), but it is completely useless if the party is destroyed first. Survival should have taken priority over longer term goals.

Perhaps, this is an inherent issue with a Green party, they are so focused on long term goals (like say global warming etc.) that they neglect/don't care about the short term (like say the economic problems).

There needs to be a reasonable balance between the 2.

'Terminally ill' is too strong.
Unlike the PDs, they have a core of supporters who'd continue campaigning even if their councillors and TDs were amputated.

You could see a split within the Green party over the next few months - The Real Green Party led by Patricia McKenna and other disgruntled members.

I'm inclined to agree. They were like young kids who join gangs and then can't get out of them when they cop on. A very harsh lesson for seemingly decent Joe Soaps. Maybe in a few years they'll come back stronger and never make the same mistake again.
A P.ie moderator stated this on June 25th 2010: P.ie tolerates very broad free speech, and thus allows sectarian bigotry etc

Of course they do - they are working hand-in-hand with FF to screw ordinary working people. Even getting two seats is two too many (and I have no idea how Meaney managed to scrape home in Ennis).
