RTE Exit General Election Poll 2009

    FG 37 FF 21 LAB 21 SF 9 Green 3 Others 10

On these stats, a FG-Others-Green govt would be possible. In the event that the results panned out as above, is FG prepared to ditch Labour and form a govt without them? After all, the 2 parties diverge on almost all elements of economic policy, and Labour has frequently been the weakest link in FG-led govts. If they would, persons like me who like what FG has to say, but dislike Labour with a passion, would be more open to voting for them.

With respect, FT, Ruairi Quinn was probably the best MoF in recent history

FG's objective is to form a government with the largest FG component possible.

It is the people's choice as to what mandate they give the party.

For Sinn Féin this is an encouraging poll - more than 2% up on the general election 2007. This is consistent with the steady growth in support that the party is aiming for and should see a number of extra Sinn Féin TFs elected next time. These are good days for Sinn Féin.

At the moment the Greens would lose every TD they have. We then have the interesting proposition of FG being able to form a coalition with Labour or with SF and others. Given the obvious distaste for having SF in government, I cannot see FG favoring the second option.

Labour's growth can make them play hardball. The "rotating Taoiseach" could be back on the agenda, as Gilmore's rating a far higher than Kenny's.

Labour also have the FF option while FG have nowhere to go. The only way to stop Labour getting in is for centre-right people to ditch FF and get behind FG.

On the same basis Labour has gone from 10 to 21, more than doubling their vote. Fianna Fail, the largest party in the state, has fallen from 41 to 21.

Are you not disappointed that in a time when right-wing economics has taken a hammering, when Fianna Fail is imploding, that SF, a left-wing party, untainted from any of the economic mess, has made such poor gains. At some stage, factual, you need to step back and make a proper assessment of SF's performance, and question what is holding them back.
