    Donegal Bye-Election?

So if Pat the Cope gets in, there will have to be a bye election right?

Or is Pat the Cope and FF going to cynically nominate a sub, completely abusing the already flawed MEP electoral process.

If he does nominate a sub, the people will not have directly elected their MEP and 99% would not have known who the sub was.

    That is some representation alright.

Would FF win the bye election? I think FG must have a good chance in any bye election in Donegal as have Sinn Fein.

Noe 100% sure on this, But I think he has to take his seat at EU and therefore cause a bye-election. I wonder are FF giving up DSW? I think Doherty would take the bye-election and word from 'the stableboy' is that Coughlan is heading to the EU Commission to replace McCreevy!

I don't know whether FF were expecting to lose the seat here or not. If they were than the Cope was in to keep up their vote and allow easy passage to Commission for MC. However if Cope gets in will this change the plans for Coughlan? Both in DSW and one of them was going to lose out at next election. But if Cope gets in and Mary moves to Brussels then they will need a viable candidate to replace them. There would in essence be two bye-elections in the one constituency, with SF taking the first one, and whoever the new FF is would take the other in all likelihood, giving their percentage there anyway.

It's something to keep an eye on.

If (and its a big if) he win and takes his seat, there will be a by election. If he nominated the sub, wow, that would be taking the p*ss!

Paddy the Cope said during the campaign that his decision to return from Europe in 2002 was the greatest mistake of his career.

ie. he regrets having fallen for Bertie Ahern's laughable promise of a Cabinet job

Subs only come into play after a member has taken their seat and then resigns or dies.
