    Town council/council Whats the difference?

How does a person running for a council election thus get voted into a town council election? If you take balbriggen in fingal for example certin candidadates are running in the county council elections but are getting voted into the balbriggen town council? How is this?

They are two separate local authorities, perhaps do a wee bit of research before posting such a newbie query?

A very good point and a farce imho.

Take Macroom for example in Cork.

Martin Coughlan of LAB is running in Macroom LEA (which goes from Ballincollig to the Cork-Kerry Border) and stands a VERY good chance of being elected tmro.

But he is also running in Macroom Town Council and will prob get elected for that too.

This is a joke.... One Cllr having a dual mandate donating 50% of the time to 2 areas where it would be better they serve their time 100% in one particular area.

Thus the argument for County Council LEAs/ Town councils to be seriously shaken up/amalgamated into one overall entity makes sense ...

That's a bit forthcoming - seemed like a genuine query to me

It obviously seems strange in the Dublin region but isn't for other areas where the 'town' area is clearly distinct. A town council is a mini council for the town as opposed to the county. Candidates are free to run for both. Many of these councils would have almost no real power and a lot of their duties would overlap with those of the county council. For these reasons I don't see a problem with alllowing a dual mandate for town/county councils.

    I do ....

I personally think the whole thing of County Council LEAs and Town Councils should be drastically amended/reformed

And just increase the number of Seats for areas of County Council LEAs to incorp Towns within and those elected hold sway over the whole area both Rural and Urban .... if needs be the number of Seats for each such LEA to incorp Town(s) are proportionate to the overall population of that specific area

This Town Council and County Council thing is a joke ... Seats for bums and too many of them

    And going BACK to Macroom ....;

We have 9 Seats for Macroom Town
And we have 4 Seats for the whole area (INCL Ballincollig) from Ballincollig to the Cork/Kerry Border

Does that make sense to you?????

    Sorry if I'm missing something

Says the guy with 19 posts to his name. Anyway, he WAS doing research - by asking people on here who might have more knowledge on this subject.
