    pOLLING CLOSING IN TEN MINUTES

    Interesting day today .
Within a short while all the guess work is going to be over.
Must say I would not like to be a politician ,of any party tonight.
i suspect the torment must be huge when its too late to do any more and the waiting now begins
Must also say in reading through some of the bile on these pages I am astounded at some of the really childlike commentary
Politics in an open democracy is all about open discussion and debate where alternate views are allowed and indeed welcomed.
To see comments like "all ff voters are gob********************es ,or deluded ,or criminals or whatever is just pure juvenile waffle
In a democracy its allowed to vote for whomever one likes .it seems to be beyond the comprehension of many that that is indeed the case and people do just that.

I tell you what i do fear however ,having read some of the diatribe from other party zealots that I would fear for open democracy were people who thought like them ever to assume positions of power.
There is no alternative view allowed .the only people who disagree with them are insane or corrupt. There is only one true way .
    Totalitarian or what!
In fairness -most of the commentary from FG contributors seems balanced and at least worthy of intellectual thought
    Anyway -whats my point?
my point is a very simple one-

GOD HELP US IF WE EVER END UP WITH A LEFT WING DRIVEN GOVERNMENT IN HERE JUDGING BY THE HATRED,FASCISTIC VIEWPOINTS AND DISREGARD FOR ANYONES RIGHT TO AN ALTERNATIVE VIEWPOINT.

LEFT WING WOULD DESTROY THIS COUNTRY AS IT HAS WREAKED HAVOC IN EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY IT BLIGHTED FROM THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION ONWARDS.

    GIVE ME CENTRISM EVERY TIME

It could just be FF voters not bothering to show up.

    3 mins to go

Haha, hat's what I'm hoping for, seen as I know a few dyed in the wool FFs (pensioners all) that refused to vote for FF again but couldn't vote for anyone else so just stayed home.

Genreally not! basically FF get their vote out no matter what the turnout is! So low turnout means they got their vote out per usual but others didnt get their respective voters out.
in contrast a high turnout wouldnt favour so much as FF would still get their vote out but then a high turnout indicates others did too!

This time is harder to tell what turnout means - it could save FF a bit or indeed it might not cause it could be that FFers stayed away rather than vote for anyone else!

    My tuppence worth anyway

Or perhaps pople realised ,as i have been hearing at work all week ,that whilst they do not love the current government ,they really do not want to precipitate a potential general election because they really cannot see the potential opposition being able to get us out of where we currently are.

Enda kenny as taoiseach,Eamonn Gilmore as tanaiste ,Bruton in Finance ,Reilly in medicine ,Burton as minister of enterprise ,trade and employment, hayes anywhere, varadker in justice.

Come on give me a break!Do we really believe that they can lead us out of this global recession .Do we really trust them with their hands on running our present and future.

    Dont think so!

You're forgetting who the ruling party are at the moment. Anything would be an improvement.

You might as well have typed "They're all the same" tbh.
