Clonakilty Town Council elections should be declared invalid

    Those bloody Fianna Failers!

Candidates who canvassed on an 'Independent Fianna Fail' ticket were down on the voting lists as 'Non-Party'. This is unforgiveable.

Well there's no such party as "Independent Fianna Fail". What did you expect?

Any member who runs as a candidate without ratification by the Ard Comhairle are, afaik, automatically expelled from the party. The same applies to those people who canvass for non FF candidates

They had official leaflets describing themselves as Independent Fianna Fail. This is exactly the sort of filth that has FF so hated in this country. The four FF candidates who protested at dropping Cullinane on them did not resign from the party, they merely withdrew from the nomination lists. They were not expelled from the Party. And if they canvassed as 'Indpendent Fianna Fail' - regardless of how the party considers them, they are misdescribed on the voting papers. It's outrageous. They clearly signalled a connection with Fianna Fail which was not evident on the ballot paper. It's very likely that people who want to avoid voting for FF sympathisers may choose them today. There should no be no ambiguity of this sort. One of them is Catherine Callaghan. When she called to our door and spoke to my partner, he asked her if she had any connection with Fianna Fail. She said she did not, though she is still a member of the party and her leaflet had Ind FF printed on it, which we noticed after she had gone.

Well what were you expecting to see? "Secretly FF" on the list?

I know there's always a few, but who do you think knows them well enough to decide to give them a vote without knowing that they're really FF?

There is no such thing as "Independent Fianna Fail". To appear under a party banner on a ballot paper, candidates must get a certificate of party affiliation (from the relevant party) to do so. Since "IFF" is not a political party, then obviously they could not appear on the ballot paper under this heading.

Isn't it amazing that people who leave FF to run as independents get so hot and bothered when they can't be described as "Independent Fianna Fail" ? Why would they want to retain an association with a party they loathed enough to leave?

Stupid question really. It's called having your cake and eating it. Just like those fools at the "Seniors Solidarity and Senility Party"
