Is Jim Higgins still holding his teaching job?

It is said that Jim Higgins MEP is still holding his job as a teacher. If so some poor some soul has been part time for a long time. Is this ethical?

Definitely not true...Jim Higgins retired from his teaching post years & years ago.

    Check your facts, Willanto.

Did he retire? Are you sure?

Also of course all these TDs holding teacher posts and being on leave is totally unethical - but when did that ever stop them. If you become a TD then you should lose your other job immediately - this whole public sector job security has to change. IF you choose to leave and risk running for the Dail and then win then you have changed job so leave the school. It's like going for a job in another firm and getting it but asking your old employer to keep your old job open just in case! It's barking!

I disagree. While I don't think replacements should have to be on temporary contracts indefinitely I believe some form of security is required for people willing to go into public service. The people who are in civil service jobs are probably not generally the daredevil type and they have families and responsibilities too. So if we want decent people to go forward then we have to make it relatively safe for them or they just won't do it and we will be left with even more money grabbing, self aggrandising shark types than we already have.

Would it not be easier to phone his constituency office and ask, rather than shrouding a question as an allegation? It may be true, but you'd get an answer quicker from the horses' mouth.

Brendan Howlin finally caved to pressure and this year gave up his teaching post after 25 years. Two give him his due he only took the payment for the difference between his teachers pay and the poor substitute teachers pay for a mere 22 years.

Howlin resigns after 25 years from teaching position - The Irish Times - Wed, Feb 11, 2009

To be fair it took Enda Kenny 30 years to feel secure enough to give up his job. There are probably still plenty of TDs holding onto the 'ould pensionable job'

Jim Higgins definitely retired from his teaching position. 100% certain on that. At least 10 years ago, if not longer.

And I agree with editor's comment above that you should phone his office and ask, rather than making an allegation without the proper facts
