So let's just say she got elected and that for some reasons or another she was unable to fulfil her duties as an MEP, what happens then?
Is there any mechanism other than the substitutes list for putting a replacement in place?

Interesting that a "party" which hates cronyism and all that, should nominate family members as alternates.

I didn't know there were alternates. They should be obliged to step in when an MEP is on maternity leave.
Shouldn't need them, as it would be an absolute fluke if she got elected.
