    Walesa paid €50k to address Libertas launch.

    It seems that Lech Walesa was merely a speaker-for-hire at the recent Libertas launch in Rome.

    Walesa was paid to address Libertas delegates - The Irish Times - Thu, May 07, 2009

    Polish media reports that he was paid €50k for appearing at the event.

    Walesa is quoted as saying that he accepted the Libertas invitation because he is unable to live off his state pension.
    Would that be classified as exploitation of the elderly?

    How unlucky for him that he isn’t a retired Irish politician – he’d be swanning about the south of France on his index+ linked pension.

    I like this;

    Walesa’s son Jaroslaw, campaigning in the European elections for Poland’s ruling Civic Platform (PO), told The Irish Times his father’s presence in Rome should not be confused with an endorsement. “My father disagrees with Libertas, their opinions and how Libertas works . . . But he understands that these people exist and have the right to have their voice, even if he disagrees with them.”

    Jaroslaw Walesa declined to comment on his father’s speaking fee, but said he didn’t accept payment for his EPP address the previous day because “he is supporting it and thinks the EPP is the right way to go”.
    Ganley squirms

    “Gentlemen do not talk about money to other gentlemen,” Mr Ganley told the daily newspaper Dziennik yesterday. “The word ‘honorarium’ includes the word ‘honour’. Let’s drop the subject.”

    “Gentlemen do not talk about money to other gentlemen,” Mr Ganley told the daily newspaper Dziennik yesterday. “The word ‘honorarium’ includes the word ‘honour’. Let’s drop the subject.”
    Another subject he'd probably like to drop is the fact that forty out of 128 candidates on Libertas electoral lists in Poland are members of the League of Polish Families:

    That from a man who's been around Europe on a political buying spree...

    I'd just like to mention that I would consider speaking for Libertas at one of their events for such amounts of money. David, Cookie PM me if you are interested!

    I think there's a thread already. Certainly it is odd for a political party to be giving people money rather than whoring themselves to vested interests.

    woah! I didn't say that. and I don't think Lech endorsed them, he just made a for-cash appearance which Libertas tried to pass off as an endorsement.

    as nice and all as 50k would be, I don't think I would be willing to endorse Libertas for any price. I am still willing to make a speech at one of their events for the right fee! David/Cookie, I'm still waiting!
