Fine Gael TD's wife to run as Independent

According to a front page story in the Clare Champion, Ann Breen, wife of Pat Breen, Fine Gael TD, has declared as an Independent candidate in the local elections:

Anyone know the background to this?

Did she contest an FG convention? The article does not really imply that she is running as a Hospital Indo. Where does this leave Breen re the selected FG candidates for the area?

Not sure why it would leave him anywhere. There are many mixed marriages in politics, if it's perfectly ok for the wife of polcor to be candidate or the brother of a presenter to be a general and local election candidate while they're...err...meant to be unbiased I don't see why a husband and wife can't be in different political traditions or vote different ways.
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

fair enough kingkane, but it would be good to get more detail. if they have different politics, that is cool, but me suspects someone didnt get a nomination, and that would change things in fairness.

Very brief mention in the article, what it doesn't say that it is his estranged wife that will be running although word is she sought a nomination from Fine Gael first but was refused. Not a very political situation, something far more delicate happening down there

Wouldn't read too much into it. Like King Kane said, there are many mixed marriages.. I know one down here, husband one of the top guys in FF, wife very prominent in FG.. they stop talking to each other during election campaigns, then carry on as normal as soon as the counts are over

Must be a similar situation to the one in Mayo where the husband, top man in Fine Gael is married to a former Fianna Fail/Charlie Haughey press secretary! Whats his name again? Enda something or other?
