The irish electorate and the word dumb, and phrase 'cutting of your nose despite your face' go hand in hand!

On another note if you check out the thread on laois local elections you can see that this former Nigerian mayor of Portlaoise has close ties with a convicted child rapist serving a long sentence in ireland. This guy was his main canvasser and elction worker last time around. Its public knowledge and I have provided the link to the case.Yet he is still getting a good reception on the doors. This guy is the greatest political opportunist you ever met!
So you wouldn't put down any of your opinion as expressed in that post to latent xenophobia at all?
Ireland interests are best secured within a more dynamic EU. Vote YES to Lisbon.

In the case of Eastern Europeans, it is unlikely that Poles will vote for Latvians, etc., as they have as little in common with each other as they have with us.
Why do you assume people will vote on quasi-nationalist lines rather than on the strengths of candidates' policies and/or personalities?

Anyone know of the names of the other so called 'New Irish' candidates and any links to websites?

The independent nigerian candidate running in laois does not have a website but if you put in your google search ' Rotimi Adebari asylum fraudster' you will get all the information you need.

Alternatively if you want to see the calibre of his election team in 2004 in portlaoise here is a link to his main elcetion worker and canvasser.

Do you believe that voters will trust to people, which came here to abuse welfare system and use loopholes to stay in Ireland?
How many of them came here by work permit scheme?

People will vote on the strengths of candidates' personalities and/or their party allegiance/policies.

It's not as if we haven't had immigrant candidates elected before.

    Anyone remember Moosajee Bhamjee?

Surely those who have been calling for immigrants to integrate into Irish life, to participate in Irish society fully, should welcome the desire of some immigrants to get elected to public office?

What could be more Irish than wanting to be a local councillor, with all the perks that brings?

I don't think many people would vote for people who came here to abuse the welfare system and use loopholes to stay in Ireland. But I suspect not many of these types of people are actually running for election as prospective politicians tend to be more civic-minded.

Getting over the horrid "New Irish" tag, it's great to see immigrants getting involved in politics here. The may add a bit of diversity to our dull as ditchwater local politics.
