Why do the people vote on national issues in locals elections...?

...and on local issues in general elections?

It seems to be a foregone conclusion that national issues will dominate the forthcoming local issues. The campaign has not yet got going, but the reception on the doors is very much on how the the government is getting on (or not).
But in general elections, the candidates run their own campaigns on how they or the government delivered locally, rather than the choice of taoiseach and way ahead of policies.

    The solutions:
The dail should sit on mondays and fridays and TDs must attend to receive any expenses or increment payments.
Attendence and voting records should be published regularily.

Local authorities members should be elected in very small wards to ensure politics is local.
TDs should elected in large constituencies and on a list system to ensure proportionality.

Yes - it seems to me the efficacy of your local authority will be greatly affected by whether x or y party is in national government, this is why alot of people link the vote for cllrs with how the party is doing on the national stage. It is highly undemocratic that cllrs don't have more power (though they also require more regulation and accountability with that) because, as far as i can tell, cllrs hands are largely tied when it comes to local issues of significance, although I'd be interested to hear another perspective?
