Maurice Manning elected Chancellor of the NUI

Was just speaking to someone at the count and Maurice Manning has been elected Chancellor of the NUI a short while ago with 75% of the vote.

On a personal note I would wish to congratulate him and, substantively, I think he will be a great force for good in these challenging times for the constituent universities.

I hope he will stand up to Biffo and Battman.

The decision to ask graduates to opt in to voting was very opaque, unannounced, undiscussed and unexplained. It came soon after FF complaints about the previous system which makes me suspicious of the motives behind the decision.

I think the reason might have been a simple one of cost, with such a low % of those on the register (108,000 people) voting for the Seanad panel (under 40% turnout) there might have been questions about spending north of a 100K on filling this position.
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

There may be a case for the change as you suggest - I can see reasons for the change - but what is NOT acceptable is the underhand way in which it was implemented. The case should have been made publicly and debated openly but I suppose that is anathema to the politicians and Brady/Hegarty type of academic.
