dear god man, Dana ? how could you live with yourself, if you have to pick only from that list perhaps one should consider Ali Hewson, apart from the very good things she does for Chernybol Children, just imagine how much it would annoy Bono to have the missus as someone actually important and not just an ego![]()
Enda Kenny on FF government: “We’re in this mess, not because Fianna Fáil policies have failed, but because they have succeeded.”
lads, it you think ANYONE on that lists represents ireland god help you !
thats not the presidents JOB.
the job is to be a good little smiling monkey and rubberstamp ANYTHING the government wants, whether its constitutional or not
(as evidenced by the hissy fit it throws when they actually TRY that and the prez objects. which i think has only happened TWICE in the history of the state. despite the rather larger number of laws that HAVE been shot down by private citizens for being so)

another serial pension collector
"And I spot a familiar name. John Bruton. Pension. And the figure €89,777. That's some pension, for a man who's currently working as EU ambassador to the USA, a job that I bet pays a nice salary. And, I'll warrant, a job that meets most of your accommodation, transport and food needs. The man is years from retirement, and his pension is twice the average industrial wage, says I."
Couldn't see either Michael D or Norris putting up with the "gagging" clause!
John Hume is not well enough!
Trevor Sargeant would only dig up the lawn to plant carrots and parsnips, so he's not a runner!!(or even a bean!!)
Please God we will have no celebrity contests!

what about grainne seoige
I could live with Alan Dukes. Some credit for a man who put the country's interests before his own.
Most of the others on that list don't do much for me, although I could tolerate most apart from maybe the great crook at the top and maybe Bono.
I haven't a clue who Mary Davis is and why she's so high on the list. Presumably, she's not the dead silent movie actress.

Methinks Bertiegate has sunk any realistic prospect of a President Bertie. It won't be a sitting govt TD as the govt's position could become precarious if supportive-Independents were to defect to the Opposition. For the Opposition, a lost TD is less important given the inevitability of a victory for them in any by-election that would result. I think that assuming we are actually presented with an opportunity to vote on the matter (rather than another stitch-up like last time), the next president will either be Mairead McGuinness, Michael D Higgins or a third-party candidate (possibly John Hume). The only certainty is that it - barring a turnaround in the economy which most analysts don't expect until 2012 - it won't be a FFer. Having said that, I think Maire Geoghegan Quinn will be their presidential candidate unless she is appointed as our Commissioner. A party which thus far has not shown itself inclined towards the concept of a female executive leader has chosen, in 1997 and 2004, to give them the presidency as a consolation-prize.
