Do we actually need a president? I have never voted for 1. Does anyone know how much of a pension Robinson got after leaving before going to her next well paid gig? I did enjoy Lenihan being stuffed a few years back. That was the end of the parties sending out their elders for a cushy few years of semi retirement.

I do think that its good to have a legal expert in the post as it currently stands, to decide on the constitutionality of bills before being signed off, but could this function not be fulfilled by a different post... supreme court leader or something?

that reminds me (off-topic). If a NAMA decision can be unanimously backed by the high court and then overturned by the supreme court...what the hell do we need a high court for?? Can that layer not be scrapped?

Anyway, I would like to see the presidency, if at all possible, to be a post used to sell Ireland for tourism/industry. Someone well known around the world... a Ronnie Drew type figure.

To carry on the tradition of women as president, I would suggest Susan McKay, a person of immense courage, compassion and credibility.

When I think of "Susan McKay" and "immense courage", I think of the young girl from Sligo about whom she wrote a book, about her courage in the facing down of a man, (her father) who brutalised her and her family.

When I read this book, I knew that Susan McKay rightly envied the courage she saw.

There's a President for you in that young girl.

Ruairi Quinn would like to be President of "post Catholic Ireland", to use his own words.
