Firstly Cyberianpan doesn't believe that US people have a monopoly on stupidity - and that some similar problem to this could be demonstrated in Ireland
A Gallup poll from a week back asked 2 questions that were pretty much the same... and got very different answers:
I don't think the above just applies to polling - I rather suspect it'd apply to general elections also ? (though perhaps in a weakened form)

all that really shows you is that approx. 19% of people polled dont know what nationalizing means
Americans equate the word 'nationalization' with socialism/communism, something they have been brainwashed into having a reflex action against.
In order to make Ireland more competitive would you prefer the government to:
a) Reduce costs on businesses
or
b) Get involved in a 'race to the bottom'
Clicking an ad a day keeps Politics.ie in business.
