The current issue will have absolutely no impact on the locals. At the moment they are going around siding with the people and will claim that it was they who forced the solution and there will be a solution and all the politicians, local and national, will be happy and the voters will go back to party politics. A week is a long time in politics - by June an eternity.

I agree. This is something else. It's only 100million, but it goes deeper than any tax hike or any spending cut - it's an attack on FF's own core constituency - those who see it as a champion of the underdog and compassionate government, a party that would never act so callously towards the one of the most vulnerable sections of society. This could possibly be a watershed moment.

I totally agree. To this day people remember FG for taxing childrens shoes and to some extent the same people have never forgiven them. Whether FF do a U turn on medical cards or not the damage is done. This I believe is a watershed moment in Irish politics and particularly for FF. It was an attack their own foot soldiers and they will never be forgiven for it.
I also believe that the education cuts when they start to bite will cause even further damage to FF.
Budget 2008 is now perceived as attacking the most vunerable in society, namely Children and the Elderly???
