Is it best to become a Councillor first before becoming a TD

The title says it all really!!

I have always wondered if becoming a councillor if you are in a big party was the best route to the Dáil, or alternatively working on your career but keeping a foot in the door via local political activity could get the same results?....

    What do you all think?

TBH starting off as a councillor with FF is probably, you will get a good grounding in bribery, corruption and stroking as well as getting to know the main players for when you step up to be a TD.
You might also get onside with a big developer like OOC who might very well finance you until you get elected, also the "pariah" FD will be able to guide you if you get caught.

In terms of profile it is certainly a good way of getting into the picture.

But there are negative points too. As a cllr, one must deal with all the local issues, such as roads, medical cards, housing and other local authority decisions.

Moving from a cllr to a TD can be hard, as constituents still think that one is there to continue work on local issues, while also working on national issues and legislation.

But it would be very hard to go for election without having a history of politics at some level. It's catch 22 really!

It depends on what you mean by 'best'. If you mean 'most effective', then it certainly helps (I believe there's data to support that conclusion).
