Do we need a General Election?

Is the inability of the major parties to carry the country on Lisbon going to be a problem? If we are in for a tough couple of years will the government lack political authority in making tough choices? There is also the fact that we did not vote for the current Taoiseach.

Would it be best to have a new election at some stage in the next year?

Em, the Irish will return, possibly to a man and woman, the exact same Dail as we possess now. Fintan O'Toole has a piece in the IT today and he's spot on to bring up the deeply dysfunctional nature of modern Irish democracy. We elect parliamentarians despite completely distrusting them on everything, including now their foreign policies. We then display this distrust by allying ourselves with extremists from the left and right that between them have a bare handful of votes, and we buy their contradictory and sometimes ludicrous arguments hook, line and sinker.

lol, I can see why Joyce et al pegged it.

The government has a mandate until 2012 or if the Taoiseach decides to go to the country sooner. So it does have the authority, end of story.

Yes you didn't vote for the current Taoiseach, but the people never voted for any Taoiseach. His election by the Dail carries the exact same force as any of the three occasions Bertie was elected or any of the previous Taoisigh.

I'm aware of the legal situation thank you. I'm talking about the political situation. And I'm asking not telling. Cowen has the numbers to limp on until 2012. But would he be advised to do so? Gordon Brown is a dead man walking in the UK. Clearly he made the safe but wrong choice.

Limp? He'd be Taoiseach again after another GE. Prob with a bigger majority as he'd most likely wrangle Labour.

Not everything. We trust them to do what they claim to be able to do. Get potholes fixed and sort out medical cards. They never pretended to be experts on EU treaties. The Taoiseach didn't even read it in fairness to him. Enda Kenny did but we all quitely decided he didn't make much sense of it.
