Limerick East, Dublin central and Dublin Nort West

Are there any more socially and economically challenged constituencies in Ireland?
is it me or are the getting worse?
How then do Willie O'Dea, Bertie Ahern and Noel Ahern not only get elected but on the first count and with plenty of room to spare - they have seemingly done nothing for their own areas and yet they increased their popularity.
before you all go off the deepend about how they are great in the community - they are three of the most powerful men in the country over the last 11 years and have had huge influence across the ministerial briefs. You would think they would have enriched the lives of their constituents.
Maybe i am wrong but If a tourist came to ireland i would reccomend they stay clear of all three areas less they get a cap in their ass.

    What do you think?

A crass and sweeping statement about Dublin Central anyway. Disadvantaged, yes, but with good community networks trying to change things.
Dublin Central also includes Drumcondra, Stoneybatter, Phibsboro and Cabra/Glasnevin. Many people vote FF for many reasons - sometimes (like last year) to keep Fine Gael out.
Most urban areas have their share of vioence - what about other areas that have suffered gangland vioence?

Willie gets a huge vote because of his canvassing, his high visibility and he is FF. I conjecture that he would get elected in any constituency. Limerick East has a diverse electorate from working class to upper middle and both rural and urban. I am not a fan of Willie but he polls well across the board.

Limerick East is a large constituency that takes in some disadvantaged areas of the city but also encompass some very wealthy areas and allot of middle class areas so your comments make no sense.

When people think of Limerick they think of South hill, Myross, St. Mary's Park and the Balinacurra areas.

How about Castletroy, Dooradoyle, Raheen, Rebouge, Caherdavin, the South Circular Rd. North Circular Rd, etc.

The populations of the areas mentioned above would be a very small minority of the constituency.

If its anything like the atmosphere of '06 it should be special alright. This is what Limerick needs, big screens and O'Connell street taken over with rugby fans cheering for their heroes. All the media exposure the city seems to get is negative, i hope the media are there in numbers to record a great moment for the city. Hopefully the red army will do their part on the field aswell.

And lots of people vote FG to keep Fianna Fail out. What's your point?

The majority cannot therefore be the elite.

Limerick East also contains (up until now anyway) a large chunk of rural Limerick. I'd say Cork North Central or a couple more Dublin constituencies would be more 'disadvantaged'. And probably a couple of border areas too. Have you ever actually been to Limerick? Do you really think the whole city is 'economically challenged'??
BTW, you have a valid point as to why Limerick people vote for Willie in such large numbers, despite his apparent unwillingness/inability to tackle the social problems in the city. If you phrased your original post in a less pig-ignnorant manner, you might have actually started a valid debate.

Hi Quant - i wasn't trying to be pig ignorant - I think though it is fair to say that Limerick East carries a huge stigma due to it's disadvantaged areas - this affects perception of it's middle class areas and must affect house prices etc.
The reason i led with these three constituencies is that they have high profile TDs - ministers and taoiseach - who increase there vote as the social fabric of their areas decay...
Dublin Central and Dublin North West have similar social problems - So assuming a middleclass or rural mindset of "i'm alright jack" surely by having such a situation happening in their midst they are suffering economically or socially.

Lets be frank - there is no place for organised crime in any society and if my local TD is a power in the dail and can't can't sort it out - it suggests a lack of interest.

Most social problems are result of a minority of antisocial people - i don't want to focus on Limerick but people think of Limerick a lot of them think of Myross.

good community networks? Hardly government taking responsibilities - anyway in my experience the agencies that work in disadvantaged areas perpetuate the problem.
I know of families in certain areas of dublin who use the community agencies to make out like bandits - you can go to several agencies say, tell them you need a new dishwasher and they each give you a cheque for a new dishwasher -
If i was a constituent in the nicer parts of Dublin Central i would have hoped for a little more from Bertie Ahern.
