There has to be a General Election

There has to be a GE after Berties Resignation, Cowen can't just swan into the office of the Taoiseach without what would essentially be a referendum by the people.

I tend to agree that there should be an election to grant a mandate for the new Taoiseach but I don't think it will happen anytime soon.
We should be shaping an Ireland based on full respect for the human and civil rights of all our people, an Ireland of which Larkin and Connolly would be very proud.

Well the only thing people who voted FF and regretted it over was Berties dodgey dealings, and since Berties gone, Cowen would probably win bigger.

I don't see a problem with a take over like this, but I think Ahern's successor should go to the polls in two years or so to attempt to renew their mandate. I think it is unlikely with Cowen though, he'll try to get through the next four years.

I think from here on in, the leadership of FF will be a lot less stable than it was for the last ten years.

Yes he can. People vote for who they want to represent them in the Dáil - not for who is to be Taoiseach.

Catch yourself on, there have been many Taoisaigh appointed in mid-term. Nearly all of them in fact.

It didn’t happen for Brown, no reason why it should happen for Cowen.

It will be interesting to see if there is a leadership battle though. O'Dea has been active on the radio circuit refusing to support Cowen outright. Some jostling maybe underway behind the scenes and all those rifts Ahern skillfully healed may burst open again

Utter nonsense. There was no general election in the UK after Gordon Brown took over from Tony Blair.
