Anyone from the area who has a national profile outside of politics (even living outside the constituency) who might run?

That is not a respectful term to use to describe the mafia, the Looper, the treehuggers, and has been Ponzi Democrats trying to get their snouts back into the trough...

Just remembered: John Bryan the ex IFA leader was thinking of running for FG in the Euros but didn't. He could be talked into running? You heard it here first. A betting type of person might make a profit from this early tip?

Olivia O'Leary has often been mentioned as a possible candidate in CK over the years.

No thanks, we have enough PC liberals in the Dail already. She'd come across as an arrogant liberal in Carlow-Kilkenny.

I like the efficiency on this with a by - election thread nearly as soon as Big Phil was confirmed to be leaving us. Should be between FF and FG with SF needing a good candidate to contest. One would think it would be a Kilkenny candidate to win considering that is where Phil Hogan is from and a there is a lot more voters there (Population of Kilkenny 95,000 compared to Carlow 55,000.) A lot more councillors in Kilkenny too (24-18)
Fianna Fáil - Jennifer Murnane O'Connor topped the poll in Carlow town with 13% of the vote and FF got about 39% in total their with FG getting just under 24% so FF would do well there with other capable candidates from Carlow too such as John Pender and Fintan Phelan but Micheal Martin probably wants a female candidate. In Kilkenny, Andrew McGuinness got the most votes in the county as he topped the Kilkenny City East LEA but his father is currently a sitting FF TD. Matt Doran and Joe Malone topped Kilkenny City West LEA and Peter Cleere was second to Andrew McGuinness so FF have plenty of candidates with election experience to choose from. Unlikely for Bobby or Eamon Aylward to be selected.
Fine Gael - All candidates who ran in 2011 got elected. Really don't know who could get selected here. In Carlow, Tommy Kinsella did the best in the locals but wouldn't challenge FF. In Kilkenny there is a few decent councillors like Pat Dunphy, Michael Doyle or Mary Hilda Cavanagh and David Fitzgerald. The most likely candidate though would have to be Senator Pat O'Neill who would go head to head with FF.
Labour - Maurice Shortall should be the candidate after he topped the Castlecomer LEA with 1,665 votes, which was more I think then Labour got in the Dublin West by-election. I think he could do well, possibly the best by-election candidate they have since Pat Nulty (less his antics after getting elected) Willie Quinn and Tomás Breathnach got around 1,000 votes each so would be decent replacements if Shortall rules himself out. Des Hurley was the candidate in 2011 but he did poor in the locals and won't get selected.
Sinn Fein - The two candidates in 2011, Kathleen Funchion and John Cassin might still fancy themselves going for the by-election. Cassin came third in the 10-seater Carlow town LEA behind two FF's (Murnane O'Connor and Pender) and the three of them were elected on the first count. Funchion got elected in Kilkenny City West LEA without reaching the quota after getting 952 first count votes. Melissa O'Neill and David Kennedy did well in the locals in Kilkenny and might be in the reckoning for a selection.
Green Party - Mary White was a TD in this constituency from 2007-11. Don't know if she will contest this by - election though she might be happy with her pensions. Malcolm Noonan seems the best candidate for them
Socialist Party - The Socialists/AAA have a loyal candidate in Kilkenny, Conor Mac Liam. He obtained 408 first count votes in the locals, beating the Labour candidate but didn't get elected. In Carlow, Christy McCormack did very respectable and Ned Costigan did adequate enough.
Independents - Not a constituency for Indo's to do well in! Breda Gardner was the only indo to get elected onto Kilkenny Co Co thanks to a lot of transfers. Charlie Murphy though topped the poll in Muinebheag LEA with 1,377 first preference votes but can't see him doing well enough to get elected.
