Should insolvent individuals be permitted to run for Election?

More than 900 hundred Councilors will be eligible for reelection in 2014 many of whom were very much involved in zoning land over the last decades.

In many cases those who were voting on zoning land became major players in property development before it all went bang with many serving councilors left owing millions to State supported banks that they cannot repay.

There has been much talk of reform and improving ethics in politics. Should such insolvent people be eligible to run for election while their debts are left undischarged?

How would you define "insolvent individual"? Somebody who is actually declared bankrupt or by some other measure? It would be difficult to achieve the latter.

If it means we have to have a by-election cause they are an "insolvent individual" then yes they shouldn't be permitted to enter election.

Plenty of people are effectively bankrupt because of the actions of politicians. Given that denying the vote to prisoners was ruled illegal by the ECHR, I could easily see a similar result for any provision on bankrupts.

Fact is that every citizen should be allowed vote, and every citizen should be allowed stand for election.

I don't care whether the candidate is a disabled, elderly, black, lesbian, rastafarian mother of six from the Travelling community. Or a bankrupt. It is up to the people to choose who they want to represent them.

the reason bankrupts are not allowed to be tds is because

    ROTFL!

Surely given the attitude of TD's to ripping us off, being open to backhanders is practically a pre condition of being a TD.

And who would represent the 10% + of the population that will be insolvent by 2014 (over 10% of homes are already in mortgage arrears of 3 months or more and the figure is growing monthly)

You realise that 10% of mortgages doesn't equate to 10% of the population, or even 10% of homeowners?

The majority cannot therefore be the elite.
