    New Mayor of Dublin

The new lord mayor of Dublin is Paddy Bourke of labour after so many near misses no one would begrudge it to him.

    Good stuff! Congratulations to him.

What exactly does a Mayor do? Is it largely a ceremonial role?

At the moment it is a largely ceremonial role, but mayors can use it well as a grand-standing pitch. Gormley used it effectively for that purpose in his time.

This is disappointing. The Labour party were the ones central in helping transform the office of the Presidency from a semi-retirement home, handed out among parties as a honorary gift. People would say 'ahh sure doesnt he deserve it after all these years' or 'sure who wouldnt begrudge him' and other pathetic reasons.

Dublin is trying to position itself as a world-class city to work, live and invest. We need a pro-active and modern Lord Mayor, who has bigger ambitions that cutting ribbons. If we are to win trust for the office to hold real power after a direct-election, then the office should go to the best qualified candidate, to the maximum benefit of all Dublin.

Maybe Paddy Bourke will be that type of Lord Mayor, I just hope he wont complete his tenure in total anonymity, like most of his predecessors.

Well in recent years their job has been to take the blame when something goes wrong in the Ministery of the Environment, but that role they no longer fill that role for some reason.

labour promised to have a directly elected city mayor in both dublin and cork to make te position much more accessible to the public i.e. they vote for the mayor not the councillors etc.
    also to create greater responsibilites

    Aidan,

I happily voted for Paddy Bourke and I think your comments are unfair. Yes we should have a directly elected Mayor and I have argued for that consistently. We also need real financial reform and again I have argued for that consistently. It will also involve Councillors taking real decisions and, occasionally alone, I have argued for that.

In the meantime within the constraints of the awful Local Government system that we have I know that Paddy will do a great job.
