    Presidentail thread 2018.

OK, sorry for opening this thread (and if it's in the wrong place, mods, please feel absolutely free to move it - I'm still not sure about where and when to open a thread).

Anyway, it's seven years away. At this stage though - and given that all of the candidates for the 2011 election were known in advance - can anyone suggest potential candidates for 2018. Remember that they'll have to learn a good blas of Gaeilge in the meantime.

Can Bono recast himself to sing his songs in Irish? Can Twink consider a run? Maybe Sinéad O'C will recover her wits enough to tackle the Dana angle. Maybe Tubridy will take up the lost chance that Gaybo turned down. Or Pat Kenny.

I'd like to think that there are some serious statesmen out there. ANother Robinson McAleese or Higgins. Someone with gravitas some presence and some authority.

I'd hate the thought that the next campaign be similar to this one.

Does anyone have any suggested candidates that would fit the bill?

And before anyone says that it's too early, can I suggest that the stuff that some of these candidates had to deal with extended well beyonf the period covered by the period since the least election.

Anyway ,it would be fun to see if there any emerging candidates.

Given that Higgins has indicated that he will likely only serve one term, then that would leave the way open for the Vice President!

    Arrr, I agree entirely.

The question, though, is almost in the aspect of being a wrapup. Come one, we're taking down the marquee while the folding seats are being loaded into the truck. We're asking the question "jaysus, where the fck are we next week? Some do out in Saggart, is it?"

The candidates - I would hope - should already by emerging. I' d like to know who people think will be for the job.

OK, I'll kick the ball off:

It's possible that FF will by then feel themselves rehabilitated enough to suggest Bertie. (Things like this happen in politics and if they're in power again who knows?)

John Bruton will be 74. Not that much older than Higgins and looking in good shape.

    Dana? She might try again.

Gallagher may have rehabilitated his image by then and may have party finances and backing.

Proinsias De Rossa would be too old by then and his Presidential Oath could take weeks (sorry, Proinsias).

Eitherway, the point is that the candidates are in front of us. Known to us. It might be fun to speculate. Or not.
