Voter refusing to take referendum slips

What are the legalities of a voter refusing to take the referendum slips, I witnessed a man refuse to take them today, and have heard reports that some voters are being asked do they want the referendum slips. If refusing to take them is it not possible that the staff could then fill them in with their own preference.
It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument.

I think they have to go in the boxes blank, or maybe not?

If they are stamped, then they probably have to go into the box blank. Presumably, they are marked void in some way. Otherwise, they could be misinterpreted as spoiled ballots.

Was mentioned on 9 o'clock news as well.

This is why democracy doesn't work.

I was not asked if I wanted them, they were handed to me automatically, which I think was the correct procedure

Once it is stamped, it has to go in the box. It is then taken as a spoiled vote, I would think.

What kind of a muppet would hand a paper back to the polling clerk?! Just say you don't want it if you don't intend to vote.

But then the level of ignorance about these matters is extraordinary. My cousin thought it was a general election today. I'm not kidding.

Given the number of posters making this claim, it's a bit disconcerting.

This throws up the whole issue of the quality of polling staff. There is another thread on here about some voter being told by the polling clerk what the referendums are about!

Why don't they take a few people off the dole and give them a day's work. Im my polling station, it's the same oul wans for the last 20 years and it's no coincidence they are Fianna Failers.
