Today most ballot boxes have cable ties on them and I saw a letter from the sheriff to the presiding officers specifically saying do not use wax...??

These cable ties could be subject to interferance/ replacement at any time between the start of and the counting of votes.

I went to several schools in the area and most only had cable ties. Some ( the old metal ones) had string and a lock, however the keys were on an elastic band and reached the lock without any trouble... String with no wax is hardly a secure way of tying a ballot box..!

Hang on I'll tie up my bike outside...!
Any thoughts on the matter folks. You all seem to have lost your tongues..!

    Incident

Voted yesterday in DublinSouthCentral and witnessed an election officer assisting someone with there vote i.e. standing beside them and showing them how to fill in the ballot paper. Is this acceptable?

I doesn't sound right. Explaining how to make a valid vote should be acceptable. Completing or "helping" to complete the ballot should not be.

    it is worrying.
another concern would be the lack of asking for id. i've been asked for id 4 times when voting so far (at one general election, at the last european elections, on thursday recently and at an earlier referendum. i should note i have only be eligible to vote since 2002 and that is after the general election of that year.) but no one else in my family has been asked for id and nor has any one who i talked to at work said they never were asked for id. i don't mind being asked for id but what i do mind is that no one else i know have been.

don't use cable ties or string. i don't think they'd be secure

I had a similar experience. I arrived last minute to the polling station and exchanged some pleasantries with the two ladies. One anyway passed a comment about me getting there just in time. I replied it's never too early or too late to keep FF out. The reply from the young wan was so long a we keep McGuinness out cause if he gets elected it could cause trouble! Should that carry on be reported?

As long at the wishes of the voter is what goes down on the ballot paper it is ok to help a voter who requires it, I helped my mother for years reading out what was on the paper and marking what she wanted on it.
