Now I know how anti-Lisbon supporters feel ...

Frankly, not that exercised over the Presidential election, IMHO either Higgins or Gallagher will make a fine President.

The defeat on Judges' pay - meh, I can live with a defeat there too.

However I believe the impending defeat in the other referendum bodes illwell for us as a country.

Unfortunately, there hasn't been sufficient debate on this issue. To my mind, notwithstanding the Abbeylara case, the Oireachtas demonstrated the likely nature of any such investigations and its 'fair rules and procedures' when it investigated that lowlife Callely. There was at least one lawyer on that committee who should have known fair rules and procedures - Alex White - but it didn't happen. Luckily for Callely, and unfortunately for the rest of us, he had recourse to the Courts on that occasion which found in his favour.

I ask:- what if it weren't someone like Callely next time - what if it were you?

The referendum will pass. We will be the poorer as a nation for it.

Thanks to FF we can't get much poorer as a nation. I would welcome any change to the constitution that will hold the political, civil service and business classes to account for the damage done to this country over the last seven years. The fact that our parliament could not conduct such enquiries is the disgrace.

And if the amendment is passed our parliament will rush to inquire into the political, civil service and business class and the damage we have suffered at their hands over the past seven years? Somehow I doubt that they themselves will be their first or ever target.

This scares the hell out of me.

The crooks who wrecked the country will defend themselves, but waid for when they go after smaller people,

we'll be before the european courts on this one...

And as our parliment is made up of "the political, civil service and business classes" what are the odds that they'll use those powers against them and there own kind?

Then vote NO. If, please God, it doesn't pass, you'll have done your bit; if it does, then when it goes wrong, you'll be able to say: not my fault, I did the right thing. Which is all anyone can do.

An inquiry into the banking crisis is part of the programme for govt. I would welcome Brian Cowen's appearance before a Dáil committee - answering questions on the bank guarantee. I look forward to Seanie Fitz and Fingers appearing before the committee too.
