International election observers unhappy with our register

A group of international observers are likely to recommend changes to our register, this is not really a surprise to anyone is it ??

As the PDs and the Greens both recommended the centralisation of the electoral-register in their election manifestos, I would hope that would come out of the next Programme for Government. The current shambles has to stop. We cannot keep on saying were going to get the register right only to come across more stories of people being turned away from the polls like last week.

Obviously the current register had all the core PD supporters removed and that was the reason for your melt down

Is there any central record of citizens ? Does each person only get 1 PPS number for example, or can you get 2 if you apply more than once ?

Mad as it may sound, but when the little plastic social welfare cards came out first, about 10 or so years ago, I actually recieved 4 of them!!!!

Though I still think some linking with the PPS number systemm is the best way forward.

The only difficulty with it, may be the place of registration and address system.

I have moved into a new registration area since I first received my PPS number, so would I stay at my old address, or whose responsibility would it be to move me to my new address ?

I would have them (yearly?) send everyone a voter registration message by mail. It would be sent to your last know address and would contain a random password. It can be mailed back to the registrar with the new address for the person listed, or the person can log into the internet to change their address.

PS. the Fine Gael policy sounds good ... though ideally there should be more than 1 check performed.

The PPS number is used for tax purposes ... or is that RSI number? Anyway, a person is unlikely to register for tax twice, so that would cover multiple registrations. Also, it would mean that people who aren't in the country for tax purposes are de-registered automatically.

I think that using the PPS number in a central registry is the only way forward. And if we had that, then each person who gets out there and actually votes could get either (say) a 100 euro tax rebate, or a matching pension / social welfare bonus.

This would be an awful lot better use of money than paying for the storage of Cullen / Dempsey's eVoting machines!

EUR 100 per voter would add alot to the cost of the elections. It is in the hundreds of millions Euro range per election. I could see people arguing that it represents another hospital or something. One option would be to have a specific tax. Each voter would be paid, and then each resident would be charged a tax high enough to cover the cost.

It has the benefit of giving people a reason to go and leveling the playing field between those who are time rich and time poor. It has a disadvantage that it would encourage voter fraud by people with 2 PPS numbers. However, making sure the numbers must be 'active' should be protection against that.

Btw, how much do we currently spend on elections ?
